If you are planning to take your caravan into Europe, then obviously you will need some form of European caravan insurance.

UK caravan insurance may or may not provide cover for driving in Europe. If ‘as standard’ it does not, then you may be able to purchase supplementary cover for a period of time.

In Europe, as in the UK, the law may typically require you to have, at least, third party liability cover. Given the probable value of your caravan though, driving on the minimum cover may not be advisable.

European caravan insurance may provide cover for any country you visit, providing that it is an EU member state. Alternatively, some policies may only provide cover for nominated countries and if so, you should be sure to include any countries that you plan to visit and all of those that you may transit through, in your checklist.

Some caravan insurance covering continental driving may have conditions relating to the need to fully comply with the laws of the country you are driving in. Some countries in Europe may have different regulations relating to caravan towing or the ages of the drivers of motorhomes, than is the case in the United Kingdom.

It would be wise to be sure that you will be fully complying with the laws in the country you are driving through.

Finally, it might be worth carefully noting any limitations on your European insurance cover that relate to the maximum number of permitted miles or days spent overseas.

If you have a policy that limits the maximum number of permissible days and you spontaneously decide to extend your holiday, you may put your insurance cover at risk.

Driving in Europe is a fantastic holiday experience and one not to be missed. Just make sure that your European caravan insurance is appropriate for the job you expect it to do!
