Although most of us tend to take our car to the garage when we have a problem with it, we could probably find out all we needed to know from the owner’s manual and by reading the signs that the car is giving.

You might not even need your owners manual if you have access to a computer and the internet and in many cases you can sit there with your laptop and use it to get through all the steps of a certain procedure. Although don’t forget that sometimes you do need to go to a garage if you want to find out what the problem is.

Have A Look At The Engine Light Or The Malfunction Indicator Light

If you see this light on then it usually means that there is a problem with the control system for the engine and does not indicate a problem with the engine. The worst thing is that sometimes this light will go back off and you think that the problem has gone away but it will usually only display when the fault is being picked up.

Unfortunately this is one area where you may need a garage unless you have access to diagnostic equipment for your computer as the actual fault code will be recorded in the car’s computer. If you see a number of lights coming on in your car then you should probably pull over.

Anything from a dodgy spark plug causing the car to misfire all the way through to a complete lack of compression can cause the engine lights to come on. Some of these problems can be fixed easily but others will have to have special equipment.

One thing that you should not do however is use anything which could knock off the warning lights in your car; make sure the garage you are using is reputable so this does not happen to you.
